چکیده

It has long been accepted that the sinoatrial node is the normal pacemaker of the heart. More recently it has been established that specialized atrial myogenic conduction paths carry the impulse to the atrioventricular node (James, I963; Merideth and Titus, I968); it is now universally accepted that the automaticity of the sinoatrial node is a function of cardiac muscle fibres. Elderly subjects seem particularly prone to develop atrial arrhythmias (Taran and Szilagyi, I958), and ageing changes in the sinoatrial node and internodal tracts may be a factor accounting for this phenomenon. However, the very existence of such ageing changes is debated; Lev did note (i194) and has illustrated (I968) fibrosis in the sinoatrial nodes of elderly subjects but these findings were not confirmed by Rossi (I969). The present study is designed to resolve this point on a quantitative basis.

common precipitating factors. Atrial dilatation was common but the SA node and internodal tracts were within normal limits. In contrast patients with long-term atrial fibrillation showed combinations of nodal artery stenosis, muscle loss in the SA node or internodal tracts, and atrial dilatation. The pathological conditions found most commonly were chronic rheumatic valve disease, ischaemic hea...

Mechanism of generation of body surface electrocardiographic P-waves in normal, middle, and lower sinus rhythms.

We used comprehensive electrophysiological/anatomical digital computer models of atrial excitation and the human torso to study the mechanisms of generation of body surface P-waves in normal sinus rhythm, and in middle and lower sinus rhythm. Simulated atrial surface isochrone maps for normal sinus rhythm support the validity of the atrial excitation model. The results suggest that the presence...

The impulse from the sinoatrial node (SAN) arrives either via the posterior internodal tract (PIT) or the normal tract to the atrioventricular node (AVN) at a His-Purkinje junction (LAMBDA) distal to the recording site of the His electrode. Retrograde depolarization of the proximal, and antegrade depolariza...

Comparison of Hyperpolarization-Activiated Current “if ” on the Rate of Spontaneous Activity and Cycle Length before and after Cutting of Atrial Muscle away from Intact Sinoatrial Node of Rabbit

It has been shown that the hyperpolarization-activated current “if” that is blocked by 2 mM Cs+ plays a minor role on pacemaker activity of the center and a major role on activity of the periphery of rabbit intact sino-atrial node. On the other hand some investigations showed that if the atrial muscle, surrounding the sino-atrial node, is cut away there is a shift in leading pacemaker site from...
